Nancy Downie, Hammered Dulcimer, and Rob Downie, String Bass
Heartstrings is a Tualatin, Oregon based husband-and-wife duo playing "music for all times" — period and historical as well as contemporary.

Nancy plays the hammered dulcimer, a unique folk instrument with many courses of strings which, as the name implies, are struck with little wooden hammers. The sound is something like a harpsichord. Nancy also plays violin and some mountain dulcimer. Rob plays stand-up string bass and a bit of banjo. Nancy and Rob both play Native American-style flutes.

Heartstrings performs for all types of festivals and events and provides both background music and stand-alone programs for historical functions, conferences and conventions, and private parties, as well as service music for churches and weddings.

With backgrounds in classical and church music, Nancy and Rob are equally at home playing Bach or "Whiskey Before Breakfast." Their offerings include folk songs, traditional Americana, classical favorites, seasonal music, and popular fare.

Heartstrings enjoys an active and varied performance itinerary. For a calendar of upcoming events, see our schedule. We also invite you to view our resume of past performances on our appearances page.

Always a hit with audiences, Heartstrings is versatile and dresses for the occasion. Visit our gallery to see some of the many faces of this truly dynamic duo!
